The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in Instruction and Curriculum with an emphasis in secondary education allows current educators to gain graduate-level understanding and content specialization in secondary education. 

Overview

Grand Valley's M.Ed. in Instruction and Curriculum, with an emphasis in Secondary Education, offers advanced knowledge and specialized skills in secondary education. This program prepares teachers to become leaders in middle and high school classrooms from 6th to 12th grade and is designed for educators who want to enhance their teaching skills and competencies for working specifically with secondary school students.

Students can expect coursework that covers the social foundations of education, research and evaluation methods, and core topics such as assessment, facilitating school environments, and curriculum development. The program also includes specialized courses focusing on the development and instructional needs of middle and high school students, literacy instruction, and elective options to tailor your learning experience. Additionally, there is a practicum or field experience component, and a capstone project or thesis to culminate your studies.

The College of Education and Community Innovation’s Office of Certification and Accreditation provides centralized services for advising, field placement, and certification. Flexible classes, available evenings, weekends, and during summer, along with online options, make it easier for teachers and administrators to plan their schedules. Faculty members, who are leaders in their fields, blend the philosophy of education with students’ needs as practitioners. The program is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association.

Application Deadline

Deadline for fall semester is July 15; winter, November 15; spring/summer, March 15. Early application is strongly encouraged to secure course enrollment. Those applications received after the deadline will be considered on an individual basis and program availability. Late applicants should contact program director Ellen Schiller, [email protected]. The $30 nonrefundable application fee is waived if you have previously applied to GVSU.
