School psychology is a field that focuses on the assessment, prevention, and intervention of academic, social, and mental health issues affecting students in educational settings.
Grand Valley's School Psychology program is a comprehensive, full-time program that spans three years and includes extensive coursework and practicum experiences. The program prepares students to become licensed school psychologists, focusing on the assessment, prevention, and intervention of academic, social, and mental health problems affecting youth in school settings. Students complete 63 credit hours, including over 600 practicum hours in the first two years and a 1,200-hour internship in the third year.
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics essential for effective practice in school psychology. Students will study applied behavior analysis, assessment techniques, intervention strategies, and mental health services. The program also emphasizes practical experience, with students participating in field experiences and state projects that align with national standards. This hands-on approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to address the diverse needs of students in various educational settings.
The program is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and is connected to high-quality field experiences and state projects. There is a critical shortage of school psychologists at both the state and national levels, making this a high-demand career. Additionally, the program offers specialized coursework and the opportunity to earn K-12 School Psychologist Certification, providing graduates with a competitive edge in the job market.
